The Business of Sport (2)

As in other sectors, women in sport have not received fair treatment. At first it was “appropriate” that women participate in sports. Besides lacking in any professional sport is important, inequalities are particularly evident in the Olympics. It was not until 1984, during the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, to enable women to participate in a marathon. Other reasons cited were the health, decency and the need to stay home. ” The adoption in 1972 of Title IX has helped to create new business opportunities for women’s professional sports by allowing women to participate fully in sports. Many were the women’s leagues have been created and which have disappeared. The men’s basketball league, National Basketball Association, created and funded the equivalent female named Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The main reason for such altruism was primarily economic. Besides its impact on professional sports, Title IX has had a dramatic effect on the business of collegiate sports. The title is so integrated into the culture of sport that hardly anyone is aware of its existence. During the Open Tennis United States 2002, the famous player Jennifer Capriati replied to a question on Title IX with a sincere “sorry. I have no idea what Title IX. ” At the time, Capriati was 26 years and already had received during his lifetime, the title. Today, the professional female tennis is a sport that enjoys better health than males.

Many argue that sports United States led the way for diversity in business thanks to the racial integration that took place in the Major League Baseball in 1947, now still lead. Approximately one third of major league players are from Latin America. However, there is much diversity among the managers. In 2003, Omar Minaya was the only Hispanic general manager in basketball. Professional sport, like other businesses but in a different way, has become a global business. On the one hand the concept of larger markets and cheaper labor has actually apply. In the NBA and Major League Baseball is an obvious reality.

This is an area where the issues that occupy the front pages are the percentages of income, salary cap, luxury tax or a search of the next sponsor. Perhaps the business model for the automobile industry has evolved from the Model T, but not with the same level of public scrutiny and anxiety in sport. Possibly the most peculiar of this business is its extraordinary degree of dependence has been selling the product to television, as opposed to direct sales to customers in the gateway.

In addition, many rules are identical. The income of the company remains strong, what changes in sports is how to maximize profits. But some owners of equipment (whether individuals or entities) can afford to lose huge amounts of money on grounds such as advertising for the company, the control system or the fattening of the company to put up for sale. The value of sports as a strategic content has been fully exemplified in the case of the structure of YankeeNets, owner of the Nets basketball team and baseball from the Yankees. This company was one step closer to mainstream hockey team the New Jersey Devils and was going to Europe to include the Manchester United. Despite the failure of the company, its structure will undoubtedly be replicated by future sports organizations.
